Claire Doherty, Centre manager, Carntogher Community Association said, “This event is about celebrating this exciting new facility that is open to the public six days a week.  The funding we received from DARD and Glor na nGael was invaluable in the creation of the library but we must thank all those in the community who kindly donated books and have supported the initiative from the beginning.

Gerard Treacy, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said, “I am delighted to be present at the official launch of the An Carn Community Library for which funding was administered through the Department’s Rural Challenge Programme.  This excellent  project, along with the other 80 which have received funding, has helped the Department to tackle the issue of poverty and social exclusion which is so prevalent in rural areas, in this case by providing much needed resources to a thriving Irish Language community. The numbers of local rural people who are now benefitting from this new resource is very encouraging.  On behalf of DARD I congratulate you on your hard work to-date and wish An Carn every success with their new facility.”

Special Guest Jarlath Burns who carried out the official opening of the library thanked the Association for the invitation and said “ I would like to congratulate all those involved in their efforts to develop this community and in particular the revival of the Irish Language.  Having resources like this in An Carn are a credit to the community and will leave a lasting legacy for all those involved.”

An Carn Community Library is open to all sections of the community and the Irish language section will aim to develop and improve the level and fluency of Irish among the Irish-speaking community in the area, in all age-groups from primary school to adults. It will also support the parents of pupils in Irish-medium education and support learners of Irish in the area.  Opening times are Monday to Friday 9am – 5.30pm and Saturday 9.30am – 4pm.    It is also easy to join. Just call into An Carn Resource Centre and fill in a simple registration form.
