Dúlra joins forces with Conservation Volunteers

by Claire Doherty last modified 2007-02-07 23:59

Tuesday 1st February, 2005: A volunteer tree-planting day was held recently at An Carn Centre, Tirkane, Maghera to create community woodland. The event was organised in conjunction with Carntogher Community Association’s biodiversity project – Dúlra that is working to improve the local environment and make people aware of the natural treasures on their doorstep. The project is funded by the Rural Development Council, Environment & Heritage Service and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

The planting was also part of the Schools and Community tree planting programme, managed by Conservation Volunteers, Coleraine and funded under Peace II monies awarded by the Magherafelt Strategic Partnership. Teachers and pupils from St Brigid’s Primary School Tirkane/Bunscoil Naomh Bríd, Naíscoil Charn Tóchair and representatives from the local community helped members of Coleraine Conservation Action Team plant native oak and ash trees. Conservation Volunteers would like to hear from other local schools and community groups who are interested in participating in these tree-planting schemes.

Creating new woodland habitats is an important part of Carntogher Community Associations drive to increase local biodiversity in the Maghera area and the Dúlra project team are keen to hear from farmers, landowners and local people who want to extend and improve existing woods or plant new areas with native trees and shrubs.
