Walking on the Wildside in Carntogher

by Claire Doherty last modified 2007-02-07 23:59

Dúlra Walking Programme - Saturday 16th October 2004. The first in a series of public walks planned as part of the nature project Dúlra took place on Saturday 16th October. The walk over Carntogher Mountain showcased the wealth of historical remains and highlighted the variety and importance of the area's diverse ecology.

Paul McCooey, a Belfast based archaeologist who has worked extensively on local sites, supplied a detailed commentary on the many cairns, tombs and raths in the Carntogher area together with fascinating insights into the lives of the communities who created them from the stone age through to the present day. The discovery of previously unrecorded archaeological remains including what may be a court tomb from the Neolithic period and possible medieval house sites made the walk a memorable occasion for all.

The extent of possible undiscovered archaeological remains which exist within Carntogher has given rise to the proposed running of an archaeological summer scheme. This will be based on fieldwork observation and surveying where participants will be taught how to identify possible archaeology.
