Dúlra Biodiversity Project

The Dúlra Biodiversity Project is a three year programme seeking to conserve and enhance the natural environment of the Carntogher area west of Maghera, Co Derry. It is a powerful tool for promoting interaction between local people and their environment and expanding environmental education opportunities locally. The project began in March 2004 and will be completed in February 2007, and is funded by the Rural Development Council through the Building Sustainable Prosperity Programme, Environment and Heritage Service and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. The call of the Dawn Chorus
On Saturday 20th May 2006 a dozen budding birders gathered at An Carn to hear the dawn chorus. Well, of course 7:00am is much too late for the dawn chorus but early enough to identify some of the more common bird songs.
Kids go Wild on Birds
As part of the Dulra biodiversity project children at Bunscoil Naomh Brid/ St.Brigid’s Primary School, Tirkane have been involved in a school project on birds. The project has been organised by Carntogher Community Association and made possible through funding from the Rural Development Council, Environment & Heritage Service and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
Dúlra Heritage and Landscape Course
Learn to read the historical and natural landscape with this practical course which gives an overview of the archaeology, history, geology, climate and botany of the local environment.
Wildlife Identification Course
An opportunity to get to know your local wildlife with the Dúlra Project from April 2006.
Irish Tree Week 2005
Green-Fingered kids from Bunscoil Brid/Tirkane Primary School and St Patrick's College Maghera helped mark Irish Tree Week on 9 March 2005 with the help of TV personality, Joe Mahon. They planted two commemorative oak trees in the grounds of An Carn Resource Centre. The trees are native sessiule oaks, grown from seed collected at Hanging Farm, Ballycastle.

Walking on the Wildside in Carntogher
The first in a series of public walks planned as part of the nature project Dúlra took place on Saturday 16th October 2004. The walk over Carntogher Mountain showcased the wealth of historical remains and highlighted the variety and importance of the area's diverse ecology.
Dúlra joins forces with Conservation Volunteers
Tuesday 1st February, 2005: A volunteer tree-planting day was held recently at An Carn Centre, Tirkane, Maghera to create community woodland. The event was organised in conjunction with Carntogher Community Association’s biodiversity project – Dúlra that is working to improve the local environment and make people aware of the natural treasures on their doorstep. The project is funded by the Rural Development Council, Environment & Heritage Service and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
Dúlra Project Launched
On Monday 2nd August 2004, the beginning of our weeklong Féile festival was kicked off in the morning at the an carn Centre with the official launch of Dúlra, the latest Carntogher Community project.

As part of the Hedge Laying Association of Irelands - Hands on Hedges project a one day hedge laying training course will be held at Carntogher.
