Irish Tree Week 2005
Green-Fingered kids from Bunscoil Brid/Tirkane Primary School and St Patrick's College Maghera helped mark Irish Tree Week on 9 March 2005 with the help of TV personality, Joe Mahon. They planted two commemorative oak trees in the grounds of An Carn Resource Centre. The trees are native sessiule oaks, grown from seed collected at Hanging Farm, Ballycastle.
Mr Mahon also presented the teachers with resource packs in Irish and English, published by the National Tree Council. Youngsters were also treated to a talk on local wildlife and helped build dozens of bird boxes as part of the day's activities. The children were also treated to a display by Mike Gibb from World of Owls. Declan Devlin, Dúlra Bio diversity Officer explained "Irish Tree Week offers a chance for kids and families to involve themselves in the natural world. Ireland is so low in tree cover that there is a real need for people to plant trees and look at ways to highlight environmental issues".
The event was part of Dúlra Project, which is funded by Rural Development Council, Environment and Heritage Service and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
