Feis Charn Tóchair 2010 -
Deadline for Entries Extended After the success of Feis Carn Tóchair in 2009, Carntogher Community Association has decided to make it an annual event. The aims of Feis Charn Tóchair are to promote and celebrate the revival of the Irish language and culture in County Derry. There will be a variety of sections in the feis which will be suitable for a wide range of age groups, for both fluent Irish speakers and basic learners. The Feis Competitions, including an award ceremony for the Art and Writing competitions will take place in An Carn, (Tirkane Road, Maghera) on Saturday 12th June.
The Feis Competitions are as follows:
Poetry recitation:
As the Feis is celebrating the Irish language all poem entries are as Gaeilge but children from English medium primary schools are still welcome to take part. In fact there is a section specifically for children in English medium sector whereby Irish poems have been specially selected for these children in mind. We hope to show that the Irish language is for everyone in our community.
Other categories within the poetry recitation are for, Naíscoil, Gaelscoil and Secondary schools.
Conversation:
This competition is open to Naíscoil & Bunscoil children only. In this competition the adjudicator talks to each child for one to two minutes about their likes and dislikes, school life and their friends. The children are NOT assessed on their level of Irish, but on their communication skills. This competition is a fantastic opportunity for parents to see their children speaking Irish and see the benefits of gaeloideachas and true bilingualism in action.
Scholarship Award Competition:
A vital part of developing children’s fluency in the language is spending time in the Gaeltacht. Feis Charn Tóchair is proud to host a scholarship award competition whereby part-scholarships of up to £200 will be awarded to two students in each age group, from Year 8 to Year 13 to attend a course at one of the Gaeltacht summer colleges. One scholarship in each age group will be awarded to a past pupil of Irish-medium Primary Education and one to a pupil who has not attended Irish-medium Education. Students entering this competition will undergo an oral test. The entry criteria for the scholarship competition are outlined in the Feis syllabus. Scholarships will be presented to the winners on their return from the Gaeltacht with proof/evidence that they completed the course.
Writing Competition:
Bunscoil children and Secondary school children are eligible to enter this competition. Students are invited to write a short story of 500 words or less on any topic of their choice (in Irish).
A writing workshop to assist students in writing their short stories will take place on Friday 4th June. Please see below for closing dates for entries.
