Scléip na hÓige 2009
Scléip na hÓige took place in Letterkenny this year from Tuesday 27th – Friday 30th October.
A group of teenagers from Ógras Luraigh, Maghera, went to the youth festival which was part of the Oireachtas – annual celebration of the Irish language. The visit lasted four days and the young adults had the opportunity to attend a wide variety of events.
The teenagers really enjoyed the hypnotist show through Irish with Zak Powers. They thought the silly things the volunteers had to do when they were hypnotized were really funny. “I thought it was really funny when they were riding in the Grand National” said Orlaith Ní Mhaoláin. “The girl was very funny when she thought she was doing a bungee jump” said Liam Ó Flannagáin.
As well as that there was a day trip to Glenveigh National Park and there was also a parade through Letterkenny main street, with all of the other youth groups who were present. There were sport competitions and variety of workshops as well. The girls from Maghera won the basketball competition and Ógras Luraigh thoroughly enjoyed the street dancing workshop with Tura Aura from Zimbabwe.
There was a disco and concert with the band Fiach on one of the nights during the trip and our group from Maghera had the opportunity to talk on the radio with Rónán Mac Aodh Bhuí from Ráidió na Gaeltachta. The teenagers all had a great time and had brilliant craic getting dressed up in the Halloween costumes on the last night of the trip. The holiday finished off with a Big Céilí and talent show.
The teenagers were sorry to be going home on the Friday and to have to say goodbye to their new friends from the other Ógras groups, but they can all look forward to the next trip to Creggan Country Park in December.
