Irish Language & Cultural Festival – there’s something for everyone!
Get on your dancing shoes, dust off your Cúpla Focal and get your Sean-Nós singing up to speed – to celebrate the Irish language and culture An Carn has organised a whole host of events to take place throughout the month of March.
Ever wonder what your surname means and where it originates from? Why not come along to a lecture with Aodán Mac Póilín to find out? This lecture, the first in a series of lectures organised by An Can will take place in Sleacht Neill Hall at 8:00pm on Wednesday 3rd March. Everyone is welcome to this event.
Once again with the Intensive Irish Language course you have the opportunity to brush up on your cúpla focal, or if you have always wanted to learn Irish and never got around to it, this is the course for you. There are three levels beginner, intermediate and advanced, with experienced tutors, Seán Fearon, Pól Mac Giolla Eoin and Susan Uí Mhianáin. The course will begin on the evening of Friday 5th March @ 7pm – 9:30pm and will continue on Saturday 6th from 10 am – 3.30pm. The course costs £25 and includes lunch. So as they say ‘Tús maith leath na hoibre’ – A good start is half the work! On Friday 12th March, as part of Féis Charn Tóchair there will be Debating and a Public Speaking competitions as Gaeilge for local secondary schools.
An Carn’s newly formed Irish language Adult Drama group take to the stage in Downings, Co Donegal with the play, Na Trí Cearrbhach (The Three Chancers) on Friday 12th March. If you are interested in coming along to show your support as well as join in on a great night’s craic and practice your cúpla focal, special rates for accommodation have been arranged. There will be a bilingual Family Céili on Sunday 14th March with experienced dancing teacher Aileen Close. The Céilí will take place in Sleacht Neill Hall from 6:00 – 8:00pm. It’s a great day out for all the family!
On Tuesday 16th March there will be a Disco Gaelach with DJ Art @ The Basement, Walsh’s Hotel. Age: 15+ 9:00 pm – 12:00 Táille: £5.
St Patrick’s Day Wednesday 17th March, sees a range of activities including;

Thursday 18th March sees the second lecture in the series organised by An Carn, where Diarmuid O Doibhlin will talk about the local history. The lecture will take place in Sleacht Neill Hall at 8pm.
Why not test your wits and knowledge at the Tráth na gCeist, Table Quiz in McKenna’s Bar Maghera on the evening of Friday 19th at 9.30pm with Quiz Master Seán Kerr. All proceeds in aid of Naíscoil Machaire Rátha and Naíscoil Charn Tóchair.
Sunday 28th March: Palm Sunday Traditional An Carn Walk. This will be a bilingual event with guides on hand to explain the historical significance of walking the Carn on this day. Walkers are advised to wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
