Growing up growing vegetables the organic way
During the half-term holidays a dozen members of Club Eachtra took time off to come over to An Carn and prepare a raised bed which will be used by the Club Iarscoile children to grow their own vegetables.
The Club Eachtra kids braved the cold temperatures to not only make a raised bed but help starting to fill it in with soil. They also found time to make half a dozen bird boxes which will be used to help the birds in Drumnaph. It was great to see so many young people helping out in such a way and although it was hard work they seemed to "bain sult as".
The raised bed makes it more accesible for the younger children to work in it and it also means that people won' t be trampling all over it. We hope to grow vegetables from seed in pots and then transfer them to the raised beds. We hope that by involving the kids from Club Iarscoile in this as part of the Dúlra biodiversity project that they will discover the joys of eating fresh, natural vegetables and come to appreciate the beauty of growing their own.
