Maghera grandad, Gerry Kelly aims to cycle four hundred miles from Mizen Head in Cork to Fair Head in Antrim next weekend.

Gerry is intending to cycle at ‘gael’ force speed and determined to complete the four hundred mile challenge in twenty four hours.

Gerry is a member of the local cycle club, ‘Carn Wheelers’ and is undertaking this gruelling challenge to raise money for the six naíscoil (preschool)  in county Derry and also for the new bunscoil (primary school) in Magherafelt.

Gerry is a Gaeilge speaker and is passionate about the Irish language revival in county Derry.  He is a founder member of the ‘Bunscoil Luraigh’ committee which was the first Irish language primary school in county Derry.  His only son, Gearóid Ó Ceallaigh attended Bunscoil Luraigh and now his first grandchild, Shéa O’Kane will attend Bunscoil an tSeanchaí.  Bunscoil an tSeanchaí is the new Irish language primary school in Magherafelt which opens on the first day of September.

Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta, (the Trust Fund for Irish Medium Education) would like to wish Gerry all the best on his forthcoming cycle challenge.  ‘Go raibh an ghaoth go brách ar do chúl!’  ‘ May the wind be always at your back !’

If anyone would like to support Gerry or find out more information about this trip go to ancarn.org or phone ‘an carn’ 028 795 49978.’  If you require further information about the new Irish language primary school please phone 07857907538
