Be part of something bigger - Volunteer Today
On Friday 11th November 2005, Joe Mahon of Lesser Spotted Ulster launched a unique and innovative Volunteering project organised by Carntogher Community Association. The project will provide opportunities for people to engage with their local environment and community through volunteering. In today’s hectic world many people feel cut off from their local surroundings and are searching for ways to reconnect and to become part of “something bigger”
Speaking at the launch Joe Mahon said,
People power can make an extraordinary difference in a community like Carntogher, which is wealthy in natural resources and community spirit. I would encourage people to be proud of it, to promote it and to get involved!Through this scheme, Carntogher Community Association invites individuals to become involved in the many projects run by the group. Your involvement as a volunteer will not only enhance the group’s activities but will also add to your own personal development. As a volunteer you may if you wish avail of free courses run by the association which can range from specialist environmental courses to beginners IT.
The overall scheme is designed so that anyone can volunteer - young or old, male or female, a person with a disability. There is something for everyone! Examples of the many activities which you could become involved in include: helping to conserve the environment, lead countryside walks, help with a recycling campaign, research local history or promote the Irish language to name a few.
A Volunteer Open Day has been organised by the association on Sunday 20th November from 2pm to 4pm at the An Carn Resource Centre in Tirkane, Maghera to provide members of the public with the opportunity to talk to the Carntogher team and find out more about becoming a volunteer. A wild bird display by World of Owls has been organised from 2.30pm – 3.30pm for entertainment and will ensure there will something for all the family. Anyone not able to attend the open day should contact Claire/Declan on 028 7954 9978 or email info@ancarn.org.
This project has been made possible through the invaluable funding and support from Rural Development Council, Environment & Heritage Service and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
